Pastoral Council News
• MHR needs you! Wonderful ministries such as outreach
and small faith groups need your energy and spirit
to get organized and take off. If you or someone you
know would love to be more involved in the parish, this

• We are looking for Volunteers for the Retreat Team to
work with Fr. Xavier Lavagetto, OP for the parish
retreat. Please contact the Parish Office to volunteer.
• The Leadership Team is scheduled to meet next week,
February 10, at 11:30 am, in Ellard Hall.
• This Sunday, February 3 at 11:30 am, Les Young would
like to have a brief meeting with the parents of Infant
and Young Children to discuss wants and needs
regarding the care and comfort of our children during
Mass. The meeting will be in Ellard Hall.

Treasury Notes
• We request all groups, committees,
ministries, etc. who are planning to do a
fundraising in 2008 through a special
collection, raffle, fair, collection at coffee
hour, etc. to submit a proposal. The
proposal should contain the group
proposing, purpose for the fundraising,
method and proposed date of the event.
Proposals will be submitted for proper
coordination. This is to evenly schedule all
fundraising related events along with
second collections and special speakers
through out the year. Please submit all
proposals before February 15, 2008.
• The Mortgage Sunday Collection for the
whole month of January was $9,615. This
amount includes payments towards
Second Century Campaign/Bridging the
Gap pledges made that month.
• 2007 Statements have been mailed.
Please call the Parish Office if you have
not received them yet.
• In the coming days, the Archbishop’s
Annual Appeal will be mailed out soon.
This year’s assessment amount for Most
Holy Redeemer is $59,900. The figure in
last week’s bulletin was incorrect.

MHR AIDS Support Group
• Board Membership: In this New Year, we strive to
enrich our Board with new members willing to share their
talents, life experience, and enthusiasm as we start our
23rd year. Please give us a call for more information
and details. This is a great opportunity to play a major
role in assisting those with debilitating HIV/AIDS.
• Save the Date: Saturday, April 26, for Casino Royale
Deux our major Board Fundraiser for 2008. Those who
attended our event last year will assure you of a fun
evening of Casino Gaming, Cabaret Entertainment,
Great Food and Refreshments, and
numerous fine Raffle Prizes.
• Can you help? In preparation for our
annual Board Fundraiser, we are looking
for donated goods or services to be used
as raffle prizes at Casino Royale Deux! If
you, or your business, or your employer can

Come to our Garden
Parishioners are invited to come, enjoy the garden and
possibly help with light garden work every Tuesday,
Thursday and Saturday from 10 am until noon.
Lenten Regulations
• On Ash Wednesday, ashes will be distributed at
the 8 am Mass and during the Lenten Vespers.
• Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast
and abstinence from meat. There is a limit of one
full meal on those days for all between the ages of
18 and 59 inclusive.
• Days of Abstinence: (all Fridays of Lent) All who
have reached their 14th year are bound to abstain
totally from meat.
Operation Rice Bowl
Cardboard bowls from Operation Rice Bowl of
Catholic Relief Services is available throughout Lent by
the entrance of the Church. Kindly return them to the
Parish Office during Holy Week.
Prayer Book for Intentions
In the Narthex is a book on a stand. Please note that it
is not a guest book. It is a Prayer Book of Intentions
where people can write their prayer intentions. The
parish prays for these intentions in the weekend Masses.
Ministry to the Homebound
If you or a loved one are unable to attend Mass and
would like to receive communion at home, please call
the Parish Office at 415-863-6259 to set up a visit.
From the Ministry of Hospitality
We would like to remind everyone that, to avoid spills,
coffee or other drinks are not allowed in the Church.
Please finish your drink or dispose of it prior to entering
the Church. Also, please do not leave your candy
wrappings or other belongings in the pew receptacles.
Trash cans are located by the entrance of the Church,
the bathroom and the sacristy.
You are part of Most Holy Redeemer
• Have you observed something that needs repair,
maintenance or attention in our facilities? You can
help by doing any of the following: 1) let the Parish
Office know, 2) let the members of the Buildings and
Grounds Group know, 3) write it down on our
handyman’s to do list located in the sacristy and hall
kitchen.
• As a registered Parishioner at Most Holy Redeemer,
you are entitled to receive the Catholic San Francisco
paper for free. Please contact the Parish Office if
you would like to start receiving this paper or if you
would like to discontinue receiving it.
• Is there a particular ministry, group or service that
you feel called to? Let the Parish Office know so you
may be directed to the appropriate group. You can
also look at our website and contact them directly.

OSCAR, OSCAR, OSCAR
It’s Oscar time again this February 24. And this year,
Oscar turns 80! Come join your fellow MHR
parishioners, family, and friends for the 5th year of
celebrating the Academy Awards together.
Celebrities/Stars will be arriving on the Red Carpet at
5 pm. Dinner will follow at 6 pm. Enjoy big screen
viewing, fantastic food and great raffle prizes. Tickets
on sale NOW! In advance: $30, at the door: $37,
Seniors: $25. Proceeds will benefit the MHR Music and
Outreach programs.
Co-Housing
Find out about this growing and exciting concept. Living
in your affordable dwelling within a community of
diverse and like-minded gay and gay friendly men and
women. We will meet in the Library after Coffee Hour
at approximately 11:30 am, Sunday, February 17. If

Lenten Faith Sharing Group
Lenten Faith Sharing Group – interested in making a
commitment to your faith journey this Lent? Wishing you
knew a few more people at MHR? Join this small faith
sharing group which will meet on the six Tuesdays of
Lent (February 12 to March 18) at 7 pm. We will pray
together, study scripture and other sacred writings, and
build a small faith community through this Lenten
experience. Co-led by Fr. Joe Healy and JD Schramm
this group is an ideal way to make this Lent special. If
you are interested in participating and wish to learn

phone the parish office and we’ll get back to you. Preregistration
is necessary so please contact us if you wish
to join us.

About our speakers:
Mr. Brian F. Cahill is married, father of 4, grandparent of 2; lives in St. Emydius Parish, San Francisco; 40 years in
social services. Executive Director for San Francisco Boys Home, California Association of Services for Children in
Sacramento, Hathaway Children’s Services in Los Angeles, and San Francisco Department of Social Services under
Mayor Jordan. Currently serves as the Executive Director of Catholic Charities CYO, formally merged on July 1,
2003. Catholic Charities CYO is a non-profit organization providing a wide range of health, social services and
children and youth services: Serve more than 40,000 individuals in three counties through 35 programs which
include Aging Services, Behavioral Healthcare, Family Housing Programs, Children & Child Development Programs,
Immigration & Refugee Services, HIV/AIDS Housing & Health Services, Residential Group Care Programs, CYO
Summer camp, athletic programs and transportation. $40 million budget and over 750 employees.
Mr. Peter Diaz is a parishioner of Most Holy Redeemer since 1997 and teaches religious studies at Mercy High
School in Burlingame. He holds a masters in Theology from the Franciscan School of Theology, Berkeley. Peter
serves on one of the Most Holy Redeemer Sunday Social groups and has helped with the Children's Liturgy of the
Word.
Mrs. Mary Moore first came to Most Holy Redeemer as a parishioner in the late 90s and returned again a few
years ago. She is a management consultant in the high tech and health care industries and also a creative writer.
Besides writing, her interests include reading, opera, and knitting. She has two grown and married daughters and
lives in Noe Valley.
Dr. Jerome Bagget, Ph.D. - Assistant Professor of Religion and Society at the Jesuit School of Theology,
Berkeley. Dr. Baggett is active on the Jesuit School campus as a professor and mentor to his students. He teaches
courses ranging from Religion and Politics in the United States to Spirituality and the Religious Quest in Modern
America. His particular interests include the sociology of religion, social theory, voluntarism and civic participation,
congregational studies, nonprofit sector studies and Catholic social thought and justice issues. He recently published
Habitat for Humanity: Building Private Homes, Building Public Religion (Philadelphia: Temple University Press, 2001).
Rev. Donal Godfrey, SJ - Ordained in 1992, Fr. Godfrey first came to University of San Francisco in 1993 as a
resident minister, adjunct faculty member, and associate director of University Ministry. He then journeyed to the
Jesuit Centre of Spirituality in Belfast and also ministered to those marginalized by drug abuse and homelessness in
Sydney, Australia. Fr. Godfrey returned to USF in 2000 as a resident minister and led the Pedro Arrupe Social
Justice immersion projects to the poorest neighborhoods of San Francisco and Tijuana, Mexico. From there, he
joined Loyola University in Chicago in 2003 as the campus chaplain, a chaplain in residence, and an adjunct
faculty member in the theology department before returning to USF to undertake the position of executive director
of University Ministry.
Rev. Joseph Healy - Was ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of San Francisco in 1998. He has been
associate pastor at the Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Belmont and St. Robert's in San
Bruno. Originally, Fr. Joe was a member of Most Holy Redeemer for many years before he entered St. Patrick's
Seminary. We are pleased and fortunate to have Fr. Joe as our current associate pastor at Most Holy
Redeemer. Welcome back! |
